Unique to ThurtenE Carnival, "facades" are temporary 4-walled structures built by pairs of Greek organizations at Washington University that house seating for audiences to watch live theatrical performances. These dazzling and elaborate displays of architectural prowess are the culmination of more than a month's hard work. Under the direction of group leaders called "Overalls," members of fraternities and sororities employ power tools such as saws and drills, scaffolding and ladders to construct their facades. Performances take place the Saturday and Sunday of the carnival. Construction is overseen by ThurtenE Honorary as well as safety consultants and architects.
Awards given to facade groups at the end of the event include The Burmeister Cup for Overall Excellence, Best Construction, Best Production, and the Spirit Cup. Judges are selected from the Washington University community.
